Overview
Building Homes for Heroes is a Long Island-based nonprofit that provides mortgage-free homes to injured veterans, first responders, and their families. It started right here, grew out of the aftermath of 9/11, and most people on Long Island still don’t know it’s in their backyard. This 5K is one of their main local fundraising events, and the community turnout tends to reflect how much people care about the cause once they actually learn about it.
The race is held at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, which makes it easy to get to and easy to spectate. The Kids Fun Run kicks off at 8 AM, the main 5K goes at 8:30. It’s a well-organized event with real purpose behind it. Everyone who registers gets a shirt, and the top 150 finishers get a medal. There are also raffles and some post-race activity, so it’s worth hanging around after you cross the line.
This is a good one if you want to run a race that actually means something beyond the finish. The organization is legitimate, the mission is clear, and the race is approachable for all levels.
