The EJ Autism 4 Mile is now in its 21st year and it’s one of the most established community races on Long Island. It honors Eric and Jack, sons of the race’s founders, both diagnosed with autism, and the EJ Autism Foundation uses the event to raise money for programs and schools that support kids on the spectrum. The race is dedicated this year in loving memory of Pat Petersen. That history is woven into everything about the event, from the crowd that shows up to the awards that get handed out.
The course is a flat, USATF certified 4-mile route through the East Islip neighborhood with a start and finish at the marina on the Great South Bay. It’s fast, it’s well-organized, and it draws a legitimate competitive field: cash prizes go to the top 3 overall (men and women), plus masters. This one is part of the USATF-LI Grand Prix series, which tells you something about the level it operates at. That said, it’s also open to everyone, and the community atmosphere at the marina is genuinely festive. After the race, the party moves to Shandon Court on East Main Street.
A few logistics worth knowing upfront: Bayview Ave closes starting at 9:15 AM, and the road down to the marina can get backed up. Give yourself real time to get in. Packet pickup the day before is available at Shandon Court, which is the smarter option for anyone who doesn’t want to deal with race morning parking.
