Overview
Joe Lewinger spent nearly 20 years at The Mary Louis Academy in Jamaica, Queens, teaching Social Studies, running the Athletics Department, and eventually serving as Assistant Principal of Student Life. The man helped build one of the largest all-girls athletic programs in New York City. This race exists to honor that legacy and to keep the program he helped create funded and growing.
The 6th Annual J. Lew Memorial 5K is held at TMLA’s campus on Wexford Terrace. It’s a community race with a real emotional center. You’ll run alongside faculty, students, alumni, and families who actually knew Joe, and that gives the event a warmth that’s hard to manufacture. The awards reflect the school community: in addition to standard age group medals, there are special categories for TMLA Faculty, TMLA Students, and TMLA Alumni.
Virtual participation is available May 2 through May 10 if you can’t make the in-person date, though the virtual option doesn’t include a shirt or medal. If you’re in Queens and want a meaningful community race on your calendar this spring, this is worth adding.
