Overview
The New York Harbor Oyster Classic is in its 10th year, and it’s one of those races with a genuinely distinctive setup: a 5K on Governors Island, accessible only by ferry, with the Manhattan skyline and New York Harbor as your backdrop. Governors Island is car-free, scenic, and completely different from any road race on Long Island. If you haven’t run there before, it’s worth experiencing at least once.
Getting there requires taking the 8:00 AM ferry from the Battery Maritime Building at 10 South St. in lower Manhattan, right next to the Staten Island Ferry terminal. The ride over is about 8 minutes, and the ferry is free before 11 AM on weekends. Once on the island, everything is concentrated near the NY Harbor School area where the race starts and finishes. Bag check is available near the finish.
Post-race is genuinely fun: all finishers get a handmade oyster finisher medal and a Fishers Island Oyster, plus bagels, cream cheese, fresh fruit, and a camping mug. Race-day merchandise is also available for purchase. Awards include female, male, and nonbinary categories across seven age groups. Proceeds benefit the NY Harbor School PTA.
